Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated again after the U.S. military said it struck three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for what it called unprovoked attacks on two American warships.
The reported confrontation occurred on Saturday, just days after the two countries experienced their most intense exchange of fire in weeks.
The U.S. military said the strikes were a response to alleged attempts by Iran to attack U.S. naval vessels. Iran, however, has not acknowledged attacking any American warship.
Iranian Tanker Reportedly Hit
Hours before the U.S. military announced its account, Iranian state media reported that American forces had targeted an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island, a strategically significant site and one of Iran’s main oil-export centres.
Images circulated by Iranian news organisations appeared to show a vessel producing heavy black smoke after the reported strike.
The separate accounts could not immediately be independently reconciled.
Maritime Security Under Pressure
The latest incident adds to a growing series of confrontations between the United States and Iran, increasing concerns about the safety of commercial shipping, maritime routes and energy supplies across the region.
Washington has characterised the tanker strikes as a defensive response to attacks on its naval forces.
Tehran has yet to publicly confirm the alleged attacks on U.S. ships or provide an official response to the American military’s account.
With both sides offering different accounts of the confrontation, the immediate focus is now on whether the latest exchange triggers another round of escalation in the region.
