The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the bye-elections held across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states as important operational exercises ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Saturday while monitoring the elections from the Commission’s National Situation Room at its headquarters in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said no electoral contest should be considered too small to provide valuable lessons for future elections.
The elections were held in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State, and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.
According to Amupitan, the exercises would allow the Commission to assess its operational readiness and identify areas requiring improvement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election,” he said.
The INEC chairman stressed that every electoral exercise should be treated as an opportunity to test the Commission’s systems and procedures under real conditions.
“We must resist the temptation to view any exercise as merely an ordinary bye-election. Every election is a critical component of our broader preparations for the 2027 General Election, allowing us to continuously audit our logistics framework, stress-test our technological deployment, and evaluate administrative field readiness,” Amupitan said.
INEC Monitors Elections From Abuja
Amupitan personally presided over operations at the National Situation Room as reports from the various states came in.
He was accompanied by National Commissioners and senior management officials who monitored developments across the affected constituencies.
The chairman said the Situation Room played an important role in monitoring the elections and addressing operational challenges as they emerged.
“Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution,” he said.
Amupitan said administrative and field-related challenges identified before the elections were promptly addressed by the Commission.
“Whatever administrative or field challenges arose before the day of the elections, the Commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively,” he said.
He added that INEC would continue to review its procedures and improve its processes to ensure that future electoral exercises meet higher standards of efficiency and public confidence.
Bye-Elections as Preparation for 2027
The Commission considers bye-elections an opportunity to evaluate several aspects of election administration, including logistics, technology and the readiness of personnel in the field.
Amupitan said the lessons gathered from the latest exercises would contribute to INEC’s broader preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The chairman also expressed appreciation to officials working in the National Situation Room, particularly the technical team, for helping the Commission monitor the multi-state elections.
He said their efforts enabled INEC to track developments from the field and assess the performance of its systems during the elections.
As preparations for the 2027 General Election continue, the Commission is expected to review the experience gained from the bye-elections and use the findings to improve its electoral operations.
For INEC, the exercises provide an opportunity to identify challenges, strengthen existing procedures and ensure that future elections are conducted with greater operational efficiency.
