Ismail Kartal thought he had resigned. Fenerbahce’s president says otherwise.
Just minutes after Fenerbahce drew 1-1 with Roma in the Champions League, Kartal announced that he was stepping down as head coach.
But the drama did not end at the final whistle.
Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim immediately rejected the resignation, insisting that Kartal remains the club’s manager.
Kartal announces shock resignation
Speaking at his post-match press conference, the 65-year-old coach said he had decided to leave the club permanently.
Kartal returned to Fenerbahce for a fourth spell in June 2026, taking charge as the Turkish club returned to the Champions League for the first time in 18 years.
His latest stint, however, has started poorly in the domestic league.
Fenerbahce sit ninth in the Turkish Super Lig, having recorded two victories and two defeats. Their draw against Roma was only their first Champions League match of the campaign.
Kartal thanked the players and club leadership before announcing his decision.
“As of this evening, I congratulate my players and resign from my position.”
He added that he had made the decision with the intention of creating a path forward for Fenerbahce, his players and whoever eventually takes over the team.
Most significantly, Kartal said he intended never to return.
Fenerbahce president rejects the decision
Yildirim wasted little time responding.
In a statement released through the club’s website, the president made it clear that he does not consider Kartal’s resignation valid.
“Ismail Kartal is still in charge,” Yildirim said, adding that the club must stand behind its coach.
Yildirim revealed that he had spoken with Kartal after the press conference.
According to the president, Kartal cited the intense pressure surrounding his position as well as an incident during the Roma match in which a bottle thrown from the stands struck him.
Fenerbahce subsequently confirmed that the spectator responsible had been identified and banned from the stadium.
‘We’re a family’
Yildirim also turned his criticism toward sections of the club’s supporters and the media.
He argued that relentless negativity had increased the pressure on Kartal and called for greater unity within the Fenerbahce community.
His message was unequivocal: Kartal is staying.
Yildirim said the coach did not need to publicly declare that he would continue because, as club president, he had already made that decision.
He also condemned physical aggression toward the coach, arguing that genuine support could not involve attacks from the stands.
Players caught off guard
Kartal’s announcement appeared to come as a surprise even to his own players.
English defender Archie Brown, who scored Fenerbahce’s equaliser against Roma, learned about the resignation during his post-match interview.
His reaction showed just how unexpected the announcement had been.
“What do you mean he resigned? As coach? He’s not the coach any more?”
Brown then made clear that he had heard nothing about Kartal’s decision before the interview.
A complicated Fenerbahce legacy
Kartal is deeply familiar with Fenerbahce.
His first managerial spell came after four years working as an assistant at the club. He later guided the team to the Turkish Super Cup in 2014.
His connection to Fenerbahce goes even further back.
As a player, Kartal won two league championships and six trophies with the club.
Now, despite his declaration that he has resigned, his immediate future remains in the hands of Fenerbahce’s president.
Kartal says he is leaving. Yildirim says he is staying. The next move belongs to the club.
