Leeds United delivered a dominant performance on Monday, sweeping aside Newcastle United 4-1 in a one-sided Premier League encounter.
Leeds took control of the contest in the 32nd minute when Lewis Miley inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to give the hosts the breakthrough.
Just two minutes later, Leeds doubled their advantage. Jayden Bogle rose to meet the ball and headed past Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, leaving the visitors facing a two-goal deficit before half-time.
Calvert-Lewin puts Leeds three goals ahead
Newcastle struggled to cope with Leeds’ attacking pressure as the hosts continued to create openings.
Leeds were rewarded again deep into first-half stoppage time when Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it 3-0.
The striker was played through by Tarik Muharemovic before calmly finishing the opportunity to give Leeds a commanding advantage at the break.
Okafor makes it 4-0
Leeds showed no signs of easing off after the restart.
In the 59th minute, Noah Okafor extended the hosts’ lead with a first-time effort that struck the right post on its way into the net.
At 4-0 down, Newcastle faced a huge task to salvage anything from the match.
The visitors continued to search for a response, but their attempts to break through the Leeds defence repeatedly failed to produce a goal.
Newcastle score late consolation
Newcastle eventually found the net in the 90th minute through substitute Bazoumana Toure.
Toure’s effort from inside the penalty area took a deflection before beating Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford, giving Newcastle a late consolation.
The visitors had earlier come close when Joe Willock struck the crossbar in the 72nd minute, but Newcastle could not turn their chances into a sustained comeback.
Leeds complete emphatic victory
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 4-1 victory for Leeds United, with the hosts controlling large portions of the game and producing four goals in front of 36,693 spectators.
For Newcastle, it was a difficult night from start to finish. Aside from Toure’s late goal, they struggled to match Leeds’ attacking intensity and were unable to build enough momentum to seriously threaten the hosts’ lead.
Leeds’ four-goal performance ultimately reflected their control of the contest, while Newcastle were left to rue a night in which they could not contain the hosts’ attacking threat.
