Sections of the First Niger Bridge will be closed to traffic for two weeks as the Federal Ministry of Works begins maintenance and repair activities on the key link.
The closure is scheduled to run from September 7 to September 21, with the ministry urging motorists and other road users to plan their journeys accordingly.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra, Timothy Emenike, announced the planned closure in Awka on Friday.
Why the First Niger Bridge Is Closing
Emenike said the temporary restriction is necessary to allow maintenance work to be carried out on the bridge.
Part of the exercise will involve repairing sections of the bridge that were vandalised, alongside other maintenance activities required to keep the structure in serviceable condition.
He urged members of the public, particularly motorists who regularly use the bridge, to take note of the closure dates and make alternative travel arrangements.
Motorists Advised to Use Second Niger Bridge
During the maintenance period, motorists and commuters have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge as an alternative route.
Authorities are expected to deploy diversion measures to help manage traffic and reduce disruption while work is ongoing.
Maintenance to Continue Day and Night
According to Emenike, the repair operation will be conducted around the clock, with workers expected to operate during both the day and night.
The aim, he said, is to complete the work as quickly as possible and reduce the length of time motorists are affected by the closure.
Ministry Appeals for Cooperation
The Federal Ministry of Works acknowledged that the temporary closure would cause inconvenience to motorists and commuters who rely on the bridge.
Emenike therefore appealed to road users to cooperate with traffic officials and follow all diversion signs and instructions throughout the maintenance period.
Motorists are also encouraged to allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes before setting out during the closure.
The First Niger Bridge is expected to reopen to traffic after the scheduled maintenance period on September 21.
