A stranded waste-management truck turned a busy Lagos road into a crash scene overnight.
A container truck has collided with a broken-down vehicle belonging to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) at Apakun, along the inward Iyana-Isolo route in Lagos State.
The crash was reported Thursday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which shared details of the incident on its official X account alongside video from the scene.
Emergency crews moved in
LASTMA said its rescue personnel were already at the location as efforts began to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.
According to the agency, the container truck, carrying a 20-foot container, struck the stationary LAWMA vehicle. A crane and heavy-duty towing equipment were subsequently deployed to remove the damaged vehicles.
One casualty was taken to hospital, LASTMA said, although the agency did not provide further details about the person’s condition.
Video released by LASTMA appeared to show an injured person lying on the roadway near the crash site. However, the victim’s identity and the extent of the injuries could not be independently verified from the footage.
It was also not immediately clear whether the person was alive when the recording was made.
Why a breakdown can become a bigger danger
The incident underscores a familiar risk on Lagos’ heavily used roads: a disabled vehicle can quickly become a hazard for everyone approaching it.
When a truck or other heavy vehicle stops unexpectedly on a major traffic corridor, it can:

- Create additional danger for motorists, passengers and emergency responders.
That risk becomes even greater at night or when a stranded vehicle is difficult to see.

Traffic authorities have repeatedly stressed the need for drivers to make broken-down vehicles as visible as possible and move them away from active traffic lanes whenever it is safe to do so.
For heavy-duty vehicles in particular, early warning and rapid removal can prevent a mechanical problem from turning into a serious road accident.
