Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the alleged assault of one of its students at a privately operated hostel outside the university premises and launched disciplinary proceedings against students allegedly involved in the incident.
The university disclosed this in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday and signed by Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations.
According to the statement, the incident involved students from LASU’s College of Medicine, Ikeja, and occurred at a privately owned hostel located away from the university campus.
Student Reported Incident to Police
LASU said the affected student reported the matter to the police shortly after the incident.
The university added that the matter had subsequently been taken up by the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
Although the alleged assault occurred outside the university’s premises, LASU said the location did not prevent it from taking action under its own rules.
The institution has therefore commenced an internal disciplinary process against the students allegedly involved.
LASU Condemns Violence and Harassment
The university management described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and said it had no place within the institution’s community.
LASU stressed that assault, intimidation and harassment involving students, staff or visitors would not be tolerated, regardless of whether such incidents occur on campus or elsewhere.
The university said such behaviour conflicts with the values and standards it expects members of its community to uphold.
University Urges Students to Prioritise Safety
Thomas-Onashile reminded students of LASU’s expectation that they remain “worthy in character and learning”, reflecting the institution’s broader emphasis on both academic achievement and responsible conduct.
She urged students to exercise caution and avoid situations that could place their safety at risk.
Students were also advised to report security threats and other incidents to the appropriate authorities without delay.
LASU Appeals to Parents
The university also called on parents and guardians to work constructively with the institution in promoting discipline among students.
Parents were encouraged to respect established university processes while urging their children and wards to demonstrate discipline, integrity and responsible behaviour.
LASU Reaffirms Commitment to Student Safety
LASU said it remained committed to protecting the safety and welfare of its students while providing an environment suitable for learning and academic development.
The institution added that it would continue implementing measures aimed at maintaining a secure and conducive environment for students.
The university’s disciplinary process will now determine the appropriate response to the students allegedly involved in the incident.
