UNIOSUN Makes Historic Times Higher Education Debut, Emerges Nigeria’s Top State-Owned University

6 min read

Osun State University has made an impressive debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, becoming Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned university and placing joint eighth among institutions nationally.

The university, popularly known as UNIOSUN, entered the global rankings in the 1,201–1,400 band, alongside Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The ranking was published on September 30 and assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, providing one of the broadest international comparisons of higher education institutions.

For Nigeria, the latest edition featured 29 universities, making the country the most represented in sub-Saharan Africa.

UNIOSUN’s debut is particularly significant because it placed the relatively young institution ahead of several older and larger Nigerian universities.

UNIOSUN Becomes Nigeria’s Top State University

According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, only seven state-owned universities made the 2027 Times Higher Education ranking.

Federal universities accounted for 19 of Nigeria’s ranked institutions, while three private universities were included.

UNIOSUN emerged as the highest-ranked institution among the state-owned universities.

The university’s position is notable given its relatively recent establishment and the size of its competitors within Nigeria’s higher education system.

Its entry into the global rankings therefore represents a significant milestone in the institution’s development and growing academic profile.

Strong Performance in Research Environment

One of the biggest highlights of UNIOSUN’s performance was its score for Research Environment.

The university recorded 25.6, the second-highest score among Nigeria’s 29 ranked universities.

Only Covenant University, with a score of 32.5, recorded a higher result nationally in that category.

Research Environment is one of the five broad areas used by Times Higher Education to assess universities and reflects factors associated with an institution’s research ecosystem and performance.

UNIOSUN’s strong showing in this area suggests that research capacity has become one of the university’s more notable strengths.

Teaching Also Earned a Strong National Position

UNIOSUN recorded a score of 23.6 in Teaching, placing it fifth among Nigerian universities included in the ranking.

The result adds another positive dimension to the university’s debut.

While research performance often attracts significant attention in global university rankings, teaching remains a core component of the Times Higher Education methodology.

The university’s performance indicates that its strengths extend beyond research infrastructure and into its teaching environment.

How UNIOSUN Scored Across the Ranking

UNIOSUN recorded the following scores across the five broad Times Higher Education performance pillars:

  • Research Environment: 25.6
  • Teaching: 23.6
  • Research Quality: 43.8
  • Industry: 17.6
  • International Outlook: 40.3

The figures provide a more detailed picture of the university’s performance.

The ranking report identified Research Environment and Teaching as notable strengths, while pointing to Research Quality as an area where further improvement could be made.

For a first-time entrant, the results provide the university with a benchmark from which it can build its future academic and research strategy.

What the Times Higher Education Ranking Measures

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings does not rely on a single measure of academic performance.

The 2027 edition is built around five broad pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry.

These are further broken down into 18 performance indicators.

The indicators cover areas including teaching reputation, research productivity, research quality, citations, international collaboration, industry income and patents.

The methodology is designed to provide a broad assessment of universities rather than focusing exclusively on student numbers or academic reputation.

UNIOSUN’s debut therefore reflects performance across multiple dimensions of university activity.

UNIOSUN Ranked Ahead of Older Nigerian Universities

Perhaps one of the most notable aspects of the result is the number of established Nigerian universities UNIOSUN placed ahead of.

The Times Higher Education report noted that the university ranked ahead of 19 older and larger Nigerian universities despite being a relatively new entrant to the global ranking.

That achievement gives additional weight to its joint eighth position nationally.

It also highlights the increasingly competitive nature of Nigeria’s university sector, where newer institutions are seeking to build academic reputations alongside universities with decades of history.

Nigeria Leads Sub-Saharan Africa in Representation

Nigeria’s strong showing extends beyond UNIOSUN.

With 29 universities included, the country had more institutions represented in the 2027 ranking than any other country in sub-Saharan Africa.

The result reinforces Nigeria’s position as one of the region’s largest higher education systems and highlights the growing international attention being given to its universities.

However, representation alone does not guarantee global competitiveness. Institutions must continue improving research output, teaching quality, international collaboration and relationships with industry to strengthen their positions in future editions.

Vice-Chancellor Celebrates the Achievement

Reacting to the ranking, UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, praised the Osun State Government and other stakeholders for their support of the institution.

Adebooye described the achievement as a milestone for the university and said UNIOSUN would build on the momentum.

The university intends to pursue initiatives aimed at strengthening its academic and research profile while increasing its visibility and recognition internationally.

That next phase could prove just as important as the debut itself.

What UNIOSUN’s Ranking Means for the University

Entering the Times Higher Education World University Rankings gives UNIOSUN an internationally recognised benchmark for measuring its performance.

Its strong scores in Research Environment and Teaching provide areas on which the university can continue to build, while its Research Quality score points to an opportunity for further improvement.

Greater research output, stronger international partnerships, increased industry collaboration and improvements in research impact could all influence the university’s future performance.

For students, researchers and prospective academic partners, global rankings can also contribute to an institution’s visibility and reputation.

A Promising First Step

UNIOSUN’s debut in the 1,201–1,400 global band marks a significant moment for the university.

More importantly, its emergence as Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned university gives the institution a distinctive position within the country’s competitive higher education landscape.

The challenge now is to turn the first appearance into sustained progress.

With 29 Nigerian universities represented in the latest global ranking, the country’s higher education sector is gaining greater international visibility. UNIOSUN’s performance adds another dimension to that story, demonstrating that state-owned institutions can also compete on the global stage.

For the Osun State University community, the 2027 ranking is not simply a recognition of where the institution stands today—it provides a platform from which it can pursue even greater academic, research and international ambitions.
