What happens when your phone can reach a satellite instead of a cell tower? In the Democratic Republic of Congo, that is no longer just a technology demonstration.
Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink have commercially launched a direct-to-phone satellite service in the DRC, giving eligible Airtel customers a way to stay connected in places where conventional mobile coverage does not reach.
The service went live on 14 August 2026 and is being presented by the companies as Africa’s first commercial deployment of Starlink’s satellite-to-phone technology.
There is an important catch: this is not satellite broadband in your pocket. The initial offering focuses on messaging and limited data rather than unrestricted internet access.
Your phone can connect without a satellite dish
Starlink’s traditional service requires dedicated equipment. This one does not.
Compatible smartphones communicate directly with Starlink satellites, which effectively act as mobile network infrastructure overhead. Customers therefore do not need to install a dish or carry a separate satellite terminal.
At launch, the service supports:
- SMS messaging
- WhatsApp and other selected lightweight data services
- Basic connectivity in areas outside Airtel’s conventional coverage
It does not currently deliver the full experience of a terrestrial mobile network. High-speed unrestricted browsing, video streaming and other bandwidth-intensive services remain outside the initial offering.
That distinction matters. The immediate goal is not to replace mobile networks. It is to fill the gaps between them.
Who can use it?
The first phase targets customers with compatible LTE Android smartphones. Apple device support is expected later.
Airtel says eligible customers need an active DRC data bundle or must have data roaming enabled. Registration is handled through the MyAirtel app, with qualifying users receiving an introductory 30-day period at no additional charge.
After that period, customers are expected to access the service through eligible Airtel data bundles.
One major question remains unanswered: what will satellite connectivity actually cost after the trial? Airtel has not yet announced whether dedicated Starlink packages or separate pricing will be introduced.
Why the DRC is a significant test
The DRC is an unusually demanding environment for telecommunications infrastructure.
Its enormous territory, dense forests, difficult terrain and widely dispersed communities make conventional network expansion expensive and, in some areas, extremely difficult. Security problems can add another layer of complexity.
Internet adoption also remains limited. International Telecommunication Union data put the share of the population using the internet at roughly 30% in 2023.
Satellite-to-phone technology offers a different approach.
Instead of waiting for every remote community to receive a new mobile tower, operators can potentially extend basic connectivity from orbit.
That could matter to people working far from established networks, including:
- Mining and transport companies
- Farmers and agricultural workers
- Healthcare teams
- Humanitarian organisations
- Logistics operators
- Communities affected by damaged or disrupted terrestrial networks
The technology could also provide a communications fallback during natural disasters, conflict or temporary network outages.
But satellite coverage does not solve every connectivity problem. Users still need a compatible smartphone, and device prices, data costs and digital literacy can limit adoption among lower-income rural populations.

Starlink’s complicated history in the DRC
The commercial launch is particularly notable because Starlink’s path into the DRC has not been straightforward.
Congolese authorities previously blocked Starlink equipment amid security concerns, including fears that satellite connectivity could be exploited by armed groups such as the Rwanda-backed M23 movement in eastern DRC.
The regulatory position changed on 2 May 2025, when the country’s telecommunications regulator granted Starlink DRC SA a licence to provide telecommunications network and service operations.
That cleared the way for Starlink’s conventional satellite broadband offering, which requires customers to use dedicated hardware.
The Airtel partnership represents something fundamentally different.
The phone itself becomes the terminal.
That removes one of the biggest practical barriers associated with conventional satellite internet: the need to purchase, install and power additional equipment.

Airtel wants to take the technology across 14 markets
The DRC launch is only the beginning of Airtel’s plan.
Airtel Africa and SpaceX announced their Direct-to-Cell partnership in December 2025, with the stated objective of bringing Starlink’s satellite-to-phone capabilities to all 14 countries in Airtel Africa’s footprint.
Those markets are:
- Nigeria
- Kenya
- Uganda
- Tanzania
- Zambia
- Malawi
- Rwanda
- Niger
- Chad
- Gabon
- Seychelles
- Madagascar
- Republic of Congo
- Democratic Republic of Congo
Kenya provided an early proof of concept. In March 2026, Airtel and SpaceX tested messaging and data capabilities in areas where Airtel’s terrestrial network was unavailable.
The DRC is now the first market in which the technology has moved from testing into commercial customer access.
The next challenge is scale
Airtel says Starlink currently has around 650 satellites capable of supporting direct mobile connections. Future satellite generations are expected to increase data capacity substantially.
But the rollout will not happen simply because the technology works.
Every market has its own telecommunications rules, spectrum requirements and regulatory approval process. Airtel and SpaceX therefore need clearance before activating the service country by country.
That leaves the companies with a complicated balancing act: build a genuinely useful satellite network while navigating 14 different regulatory environments.
The competitive stakes are also growing.
Airtel is not the only African operator exploring low-Earth-orbit satellite partnerships. Vodacom has reached its own agreement with Starlink in several African markets, while Amazon is preparing a competing satellite internet offering for South Africa, with service expected in 2027.
The bigger question: can satellite coverage become everyday mobile coverage?
The DRC launch settles one question: direct-to-phone satellite connectivity can move beyond demonstrations and into commercial service.
The harder question is whether people will actually use it at scale.
For now, the service is deliberately modest. Messaging and lightweight data are much less demanding than full-speed internet. Yet that limitation may also be its strength.
A text message that gets through in a remote mining area, a WhatsApp message from an isolated health worker, or a basic connection restored after a terrestrial network failure can be valuable even without video streaming or broadband speeds.
Airtel and Starlink are not replacing the cell tower. They are trying to make the absence of one matter less.
The DRC is their first major commercial test of whether that idea can work for ordinary mobile users across Africa.
