The Kogi State Police Command has arrested Jacob Irewa over the alleged setting of his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire in Lokoja.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate in the Felele area of the state capital.
How the incident allegedly happened
Police spokesperson ASP Salisu Afusat said the B Division Surveillance Team received a report of the incident at about 8:30 p.m.
Officers were immediately deployed to the scene, where they arrested the suspect.
According to the command’s preliminary findings, the incident followed a domestic disagreement.
Police said Irawo had burned some of her husband’s clothes because she believed he no longer used them. She allegedly did so without his permission.
The disagreement reportedly escalated after Irewa threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle and allegedly set her on fire.
Victim receiving treatment
Irawo survived the attack and is receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele, according to the police.
The command also said the suspect admitted during questioning that he had set his wife ablaze.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.
Irewa is being held on suspicion of attempted culpable homicide.
Police condemn domestic violence
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the alleged attack and reaffirmed the command’s position against violence, particularly within households.
He urged residents to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful and peaceful channels rather than resorting to actions that could put lives at risk.
Police said the suspect is expected to be charged to court after the investigation is completed.
The command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that those responsible for violent offences face justice.
