Arsenal sent an early warning to their Premier League rivals with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.
The champions controlled the opening fixture of the 2026/27 season from start to finish, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard finding the net.
For Coventry, it was a difficult return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.
Havertz breaks the deadlock
Arsenal took the lead in the 15th minute, with new signing Christos Tzolis playing an important role in the buildup.
Tzolis won possession and fed Riccardo Calafiori, who moved forward before cutting the ball across for Havertz to finish.
The goal gave Arsenal the breakthrough they wanted and underlined the attacking threat Tzolis brought to his first Premier League start for the club.
Saka makes it 2-0
Arsenal doubled their advantage eight minutes later.
Tzolis was involved again, sending a cross into the Coventry area. Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only push the ball into Saka’s path, leaving the Arsenal winger with a simple finish into an unguarded net.
The goal came in the 23rd minute and left Coventry facing an uphill battle before half-time.
Arsenal went into the interval two goals ahead and firmly in control.
Ødegaard seals the victory
The third goal arrived shortly after the restart.
Captain Martin Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third in the 49th minute, with his effort taking an awkward trajectory beyond Rushworth and finding the net.
It was not the cleanest strike from the Arsenal captain, but it completed a comfortable victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Coventry struggle to create chances
Coventry rarely threatened David Raya’s goal.
Arsenal’s defence kept the visitors away from dangerous positions for most of the match, while Coventry managed only limited opportunities.
Loum Tchaouna came closest in the first half when his ambitious overhead attempt from outside the box flew over the crossbar.
Coventry’s only effort on target came late in the match, when Jack Rudoni’s header lacked the power to trouble Raya.
Tzolis makes an immediate impression
While the goals came from three established Arsenal stars, Tzolis was one of the standout performers.
The summer arrival was directly involved in the buildup to both first-half goals, providing Arsenal with energy and creativity from the left.
His performance offered Arteta another attacking option as Arsenal begin their attempt to retain the Premier League crown.
Arteta’s champions make a statement
Arsenal eventually brought on several players as the game wound down, using their comfortable advantage to give minutes to members of the squad.
The result also marked a significant managerial milestone for Arteta: his 150th Premier League victory.
More importantly, Arsenal got exactly what they wanted from opening night—a dominant performance, three goals and a clean sheet.
The champions have started their title defence in style.
Coventry, meanwhile, received a tough introduction to life back in the top flight.
The Premier League season is only one match old, but Arsenal’s opening performance has already made one thing clear: they intend to make defending their crown look every bit as serious as winning it.
