Tinubu Kisses Hajar al-Aswad During Visit to Holy Kaaba
President Tinubu kissed the Black Stone, or Hajar al-Aswad, located at one corner of the Holy Kaaba inside the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
The Black Stone occupies a special place in Islamic tradition and is closely associated with the pilgrimage rituals performed by Muslims during Hajj and Umrah.
It marks the starting and finishing point of Tawaf, the religious practice in which pilgrims walk around the Kaaba seven times in an anticlockwise direction.
For Muslims visiting Makkah, touching or kissing the Black Stone is considered a significant religious experience, although pilgrims may also gesture towards it when reaching the designated point during Tawaf.
Tinubu’s decision to kiss the stone came before he entered the Kaaba, adding another important moment to his visit to the sacred site.
The President’s visit has also provided an opportunity for personal reflection and prayers for the wellbeing of Nigeria and its citizens.
President Offers Prayers for Nigeria’s Peace and Stability
Before the latest development at the Kaaba, Tinubu had performed Umrah on Friday, October 30, during which he offered prayers for Nigeria.
According to the Presidency, his prayers focused on national peace, unity and stability, as well as divine guidance for those entrusted with the responsibility of governing the country.
He also sought lasting relief from insecurity and other challenges affecting Nigeria.
The President’s prayers came amid ongoing national conversations about security, economic development and the need to strengthen unity among the country’s diverse communities.
His visit to Makkah therefore combined personal religious devotion with concerns about the country’s future.
Tinubu’s emphasis on peace and stability also reflected the importance he attached to national cohesion and the need for Nigerians to work together despite their differences.
Tinubu Prays for Nigeria’s Diversity to Become a Source of Prosperity
At a dinner with members of his delegation on Sunday, the President offered another prayer specifically focused on Nigeria’s diversity and economic future.
Tinubu expressed the hope that the country’s different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds would become sources of strength and prosperity rather than division.
“May Almighty Allah bless Nigeria, convert our diversity into prosperity as a country,” he said.
The statement highlighted the President’s desire for national differences to contribute positively to economic growth, social development and peaceful coexistence.
Nigeria is home to numerous ethnic groups, languages, cultures and religious communities. Managing this diversity while promoting national unity remains an important issue in the country’s political and development discussions.
Tinubu’s prayer reflected his hope that Nigerians would increasingly see their differences as an opportunity to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
His remarks also reinforced the broader message of unity that accompanied his religious activities in Saudi Arabia.
Abdulsamad Rabiu Speaks About the Significance of the Visit
BUA Group Chairman, Abdulsamad Rabiu, who accompanied the President to Saudi Arabia, also spoke about the importance of the visit.
Rabiu explained that the pilgrimage had provided members of the Nigerian delegation with an opportunity to offer prayers for themselves, their families and the country.
He noted that the experience was meaningful not only because of the religious significance of Makkah but also because of the opportunity to seek divine blessings for their loved ones and Nigeria.
His comments reflected the personal and collective significance of the pilgrimage for members of the delegation.
The presence of prominent Nigerian government officials and business leaders during the visit also highlighted the importance attached to the spiritual journey.
Why the Black Stone Is Important to Muslims
The Black Stone, known as Hajar al-Aswad in Arabic, is one of the most revered features of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah.
Situated at the eastern corner of the Kaaba, the stone has a central role in the Tawaf ritual performed by Muslim pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah.
Pilgrims traditionally begin each circuit of Tawaf when they reach the corner where the Black Stone is located. Those who can safely reach it may touch or kiss it, while others simply point towards it as they pass.
The stone is deeply significant in Islamic tradition and is associated with the religious history of the Kaaba.
However, Islamic teachings distinguish between respecting the stone as part of the pilgrimage ritual and worshipping it. Muslims direct their worship to Allah alone.
This distinction makes the ritual an expression of religious devotion rather than the worship of a physical object.
For Tinubu, kissing Hajar al-Aswad added another memorable experience to his visit to Makkah.
A Visit Focused on Faith, National Unity and Nigeria’s Future
Tinubu’s activities in Saudi Arabia have included performing Umrah, praying inside the Holy Kaaba, kissing the Black Stone and offering prayers for Nigeria.
His remarks during the visit have repeatedly focused on the need for divine guidance, national stability and prosperity.
By praying for Nigeria’s peace and asking Allah to transform the country’s diversity into an advantage, the President highlighted issues that remain central to the nation’s development.
The participation of members of his delegation also provided an opportunity for collective prayers for their families and the country.
As the visit continues to attract attention, Tinubu’s experience at the Holy Kaaba stands out as a significant personal and religious moment, accompanied by a broader message of hope for Nigeria’s unity, peace and future prosperity.
