Eyewitnesses said the confrontation began when the men approached the woman to collect a market levy.
The woman reportedly explained that she had made no sales and therefore could not afford to pay.
The explanation allegedly failed to satisfy the two men, who were said to have interpreted her response as a refusal to comply.
They allegedly assaulted her in an attempt to force her to make the payment.
An eyewitness subsequently reported the incident to Dr Har, who ordered the immediate arrest of those involved.
BSCPG operatives later took Abere and Aondowase into custody. They remain detained as investigations continue.
Suspects give different account
During questioning at the BSCPG facility in Makurdi, the two men reportedly claimed they were volunteers attached to the agency’s Gwer East Command.
They said they had been operating under the supervision of a Ward Commander identified as Mr Tiletswen.
According to their account, Tiletswen and another individual, identified as Mr Ipker, had instructed them earlier that morning to bring the woman to their office over an unresolved matter.
The suspects said the woman declined to go with them.
They reportedly contacted their superiors and received a further instruction to arrest her, allegedly regardless of whether she resisted.
They claimed that the subsequent confrontation resulted in the woman’s injuries and hospitalization.
The allegations contained in the suspects’ account have not been independently established.
Officials order wider investigation
Dr Har condemned the reported assault and directed the State Commander of the BSCPG to produce the commanders named by the suspects for questioning.
He also ordered that Abere and Aondowase be transferred to the Police Headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Special Adviser warned people who falsely present themselves as security personnel, particularly in rural communities, against using such claims to intimidate or harass residents.
He stressed that security duties must be carried out with respect for citizens’ rights and lawful procedures.
Dr Har also appealed to residents to provide security agencies with credible information promptly, noting that timely reports can help protect lives and property.
The injured woman remains in hospital while investigations continue.
