President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja for Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, October 29, to perform the Islamic pilgrimage of Umrah, with prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and continued development expected to feature prominently during his visit.

The planned trip was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the Presidency, the visit will provide Tinubu with an opportunity for spiritual reflection, religious devotion and prayers for the wellbeing of Nigeria and its citizens.

During his stay in Makkah, the President is expected to perform the religious rites associated with Umrah while seeking divine guidance and blessings for the country.

Before leaving Nigeria, however, Tinubu is scheduled to commission newly acquired Nigerian Air Force equipment at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The President is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing the pilgrimage, although the Presidency has not announced a specific date for his return.

Tinubu to Perform Umrah in Makkah

The Presidency said the President’s visit to Saudi Arabia is primarily for religious purposes, with prayers for Nigeria’s national wellbeing forming part of his planned activities.

In the statement, Onanuga explained that the pilgrimage would allow Tinubu to devote time to spiritual reflection and seek guidance for the country.

“The visit gives the President an opportunity for spiritual reflection, devotion, and prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability, and continued progress,” the statement said.

The Presidency added that the President would perform the religious rites associated with Umrah during his stay in Makkah.

“While in Makkah, President Tinubu will perform the religious rites associated with Umrah, seeking Allah’s guidance and blessings for Nigeria and its people,” Onanuga stated.

The announcement places the pilgrimage within the context of the administration’s stated hopes for peace, national cohesion and continued progress.

What Is Umrah and Why Is It Important to Muslims?

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia that involves specific religious rites and acts of worship.

Unlike Hajj, the major annual pilgrimage that takes place during designated dates in the Islamic calendar, Umrah can be performed at different times of the year.

Muslims undertake the pilgrimage as an act of devotion, seeking spiritual renewal, forgiveness and closeness to Allah.

The religious rites include entering a state of consecration known as Ihram, performing Tawaf by circling the Kaaba, and undertaking Sa’i, which involves walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah.

Pilgrims subsequently complete the rites through the prescribed cutting or shortening of their hair.

For many Muslims, Umrah provides an opportunity for prayer, reflection and renewed religious commitment.

Tinubu’s planned visit follows this tradition, with the Presidency stating that he intends to pray for Nigeria and its people during the pilgrimage.

President to Commission New Nigerian Air Force Equipment Before Departure

Before travelling to Saudi Arabia, Tinubu is expected to commission equipment recently acquired by the Nigerian Air Force.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The Presidency did not disclose the specific types of equipment involved, their number or the operational roles they are expected to perform.

It also did not provide details about when or where the equipment would be deployed following the commissioning ceremony.

The planned event will take place before the President’s departure for Makkah, making it one of his scheduled activities in Abuja ahead of the pilgrimage.

Further details about the equipment and its intended use were not included in the announcement.

When Will Tinubu Return to Nigeria?

According to the Presidency, Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria next week after completing his Umrah pilgrimage.

However, the statement did not provide an exact return date or outline any additional engagements planned during his stay in Saudi Arabia.

The announcement also did not indicate whether the President would undertake other official activities while in the country.

For now, the confirmed details of the trip centre on the pilgrimage in Makkah, prayers for Nigeria’s peace and stability, and the commissioning of Nigerian Air Force equipment before departure.

The visit is expected to conclude next week, when the President returns to Nigeria after completing the religious rites.
