Spotify Introduces AI Persona Labels to Flag Virtual Music Identities

Is the artist you just discovered real—or generated? Spotify wants listeners to know.

Spotify is introducing a new system for identifying artist profiles that present AI-generated identities as if they were human performers, adding another layer of transparency as artificial intelligence reshapes the music industry.

The new “AI Persona” label will help users distinguish between profiles representing real-world artists and those built around artificial identities.

But there is an important distinction.

Using AI to make music does not automatically make an artist an AI Persona.

Spotify says the label is about who—or what—the artist is presented as, rather than the technology used to create a particular song.

What the New Label Means

An artist could use artificial intelligence to assist with songwriting, production, vocals or other parts of the creative process and still not receive an AI Persona designation.

The label instead targets profiles where the artist identity itself is artificial or AI-generated.

Spotify plans to begin displaying the badge from mid-September in several areas of its mobile app, including:

  • Artist profile banners
  • Artist “About” sections
  • Search results
  • Track listings within playlists

The goal is straightforward: give listeners more information about the identity behind the music before they decide what to hear.

AI Personas Won’t Be Recommended by Default

The most significant change may happen behind the scenes.

Spotify says music from artists identified as AI Personas will be excluded from personalised recommendations by default.

That means users who do not want this type of content automatically appearing in algorithm-driven discovery feeds will not have to manually filter it out.

The move gives listeners greater control over how AI-generated artist identities enter their listening experience.

Artists Can Disclose Their AI Identity

Beginning August 11, artists will be able to voluntarily identify themselves as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists.

But Spotify will not depend entirely on self-reporting.

The company says it will combine human review with AI-powered investigative tools to identify profiles that may qualify for the designation.

If Spotify determines that a profile should carry the label, the artist will be notified.

They will then have two options:

  • Confirm the classification through self-disclosure.
  • Appeal Spotify’s decision.

That creates a review mechanism rather than leaving the classification entirely to an automated system.

This Is Not an “AI-Made Music” Label

Spotify is drawing a deliberate line between AI-generated music and AI-generated artist identities.

That distinction matters because artificial intelligence is increasingly being used as a creative tool by human musicians.

A human artist could incorporate AI-generated elements into a track without pretending to be a fictional or machine-created performer.

Under Spotify’s approach, the relevant question is not:

“Was AI involved in making this song?”

It is:

“Is the artist identity being presented to listeners an artificial one?”

That narrower definition allows Spotify to address concerns about deceptive identities without automatically treating every musician who uses AI as an AI artist.

Why Spotify Is Doing This Now

AI-generated music and virtual performers are becoming increasingly visible across streaming services.

That growth has created new questions for the music industry:

  • Should listeners know when an artist is artificial?
  • How should platforms distinguish virtual performers from human musicians?
  • How much transparency should streaming services provide?
  • Should algorithmic recommendations treat AI identities the same way as human artists?

Spotify’s new system attempts to answer at least one of those questions.

Transparency.

As technology makes it easier to create convincing voices, characters and artist profiles, the traditional idea of a “musician” is becoming harder to define.

Spotify’s AI Persona label does not attempt to settle that debate.

Instead, it gives listeners another piece of information before they press play.

And as AI-generated performers become more sophisticated, knowing who—or what—is behind the music may become just as important as knowing the song itself.
