Thirty-one Abians who returned from South Africa after xenophobic attacks are set to receive N1 million each in immediate relief from the Abia State Government.
Governor Alex Otti approved the N31 million disbursement as an interim measure to help the verified returnees stabilize while the government assesses their individual needs.
Immediate Relief, Longer-Term Support
The state government said the payment is intended to provide urgent assistance and assure the returnees that they remain a priority despite the circumstances that forced their return.
A detailed profiling exercise is also underway. Officials are examining the returnees’ personal circumstances and economic conditions to determine the most appropriate forms of longer-term support.
The assessment is expected to guide programmes focused on:
- Sustainable reintegration
- Social protection
- Economic recovery
- Individualized assistance based on need
The initiative reflects the administration’s stated commitment to helping vulnerable residents recover, rebuild their livelihoods and return to productive community life.
But the returnee intervention is only one part of Otti’s broader agenda.
Otti Backs Enyimba Economic City Development
The governor separately reaffirmed his administration’s focus on improving citizens’ welfare and security while strengthening the conditions needed for investment and economic expansion.
He spoke while receiving the newly reconstituted Board of the Enyimba Economic City Development Company at the Governor’s Office.
The delegation was led by its chairman, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa.
Otti congratulated Ohuabunwa on his appointment and expressed confidence that the board’s professional experience would help advance the development of Abia State.
Board Seeks Stronger Government Collaboration
Ohuabunwa, in his remarks, praised the governor’s leadership and highlighted what he described as notable progress across the state during Otti’s tenure.
He also characterized Enyimba Economic City as a pan-Igbo project and said the board’s visit was aimed at identifying opportunities to work with the Abia Government.
The chairman pledged the board’s collective support for initiatives that could strengthen the administration’s development efforts.
Among those who accompanied him were Professor Barth Nnaji, Professor Osita Ogbu, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, Major-General Obi Abel Umahi (Rtd), and Chief Onyeuku Chidi Ajaegbu, alongside other members of the delegation.
The Bigger Picture
The two developments point to twin priorities for the Otti administration: immediate support for vulnerable Abians and continued efforts to attract investment and expand economic opportunities.
For the 31 returnees, the N1 million payment provides immediate breathing room. The ongoing profiling process could determine whether that short-term intervention develops into more targeted support for rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.
