A 54-year-old Customs officer, Etteng Ise, has died in a lone road crash along the Ikom-Calabar Highway in Cross River State.
The accident occurred at about 2:56 p.m. on Monday near Alesi Village in Ikom Local Government Area.
The Cross River Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Calabar by its spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
According to Eitokpah, Ise, who was posted to the Mfum Border in Etung Local Government Area, lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole.
The vehicle reportedly left the highway, entered the bush and struck a tree.
Ise was taken to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, where a doctor pronounced him dead. His remains were later deposited in the hospital mortuary.
Police Urge Motorists to Exercise Caution
The police command expressed condolences to Ise’s family, colleagues and the Nigeria Customs Service over the incident.
It urged motorists to:
- Reduce speed, especially on highways.
- Remain alert to potholes and other road hazards.
- Adjust their driving to prevailing road conditions.
- Take precautions to reduce the risk of avoidable crashes.
The command also appealed to all road users to remain vigilant and respond appropriately to changing road conditions while driving.
