Nigerians planning to travel home for Christmas 2026 are facing another expensive festive season, as domestic airlines have significantly increased ticket prices on several popular routes. With economy-class fares climbing above N300,000 on some flights, travelling home to celebrate with family could become a major financial burden for thousands of passengers.
A review of airline booking platforms shows that airfares on some domestic routes have increased by nearly 200 per cent ahead of the Christmas holidays, with tickets from Lagos and Abuja to destinations across the South-East and South-South now costing between N196,000 and N337,500 for December 20 and 21, 2026.
The latest increases represent a substantial jump from fares available earlier in November, when passengers could book some of the same routes for between N106,000 and N143,000.
As demand for festive-season travel gathers momentum, airlines appear to be adjusting their ticket prices significantly, leaving travellers with fewer affordable options during one of the busiest periods of the year.
Domestic Flight Tickets Rise Above N300,000 Ahead of Christmas
The sharpest increases have been recorded on routes connecting Lagos and Abuja with popular destinations in the South-East and South-South.
Aero Contractors and Air Peace are among the airlines with some of the highest recorded fare increases, particularly on flights serving Asaba and Enugu.
Aero Contractors, for instance, increased its economy-class fare on the Lagos-Asaba route from N106,286 on November 9 to N327,940 for December 20.
This represents an increase of approximately 208 per cent within the period, making the route one of the most expensive options for travellers heading to Delta State during the Christmas holidays.
Air Peace also raised its Lagos-Asaba economy ticket price considerably. A ticket that cost N118,400 on November 9 was listed at N337,500 for December 21.
Passengers seeking additional comfort will have to pay even more, as the airline’s business-class ticket on the same route was priced at N432,700.
The increases highlight the growing cost of domestic air travel as Nigerians prepare for the annual Christmas rush.
For many families, particularly those travelling with children or in groups, the higher fares could translate into hundreds of thousands of naira in additional transportation expenses.
Air Peace Raises Abuja-Enugu Economy Fare by 188%
The Abuja-Enugu route has also recorded a substantial increase in ticket prices.
Air Peace’s economy-class fare on the route rose from N116,400 on November 9 to N335,500 for December 21.
The difference represents an increase of approximately 188 per cent, placing the cost of a single economy ticket well above N300,000.
The development is particularly significant for Nigerians travelling from the Federal Capital Territory to Enugu and neighbouring states to celebrate Christmas with relatives.
The Lagos-Benin route has similarly become more expensive.
United Nigeria Airlines increased its economy fare from N120,000 to N310,500, reflecting the growing cost of travelling from Lagos to Benin City during the festive period.
Aero Contractors also adjusted its fares on the Abuja-Benin route, with economy tickets rising from N117,627 to N196,522.
Although this increase is less dramatic than those recorded on some other routes, it still represents a considerable additional expense for passengers.
Ibom Air and Other Airlines Also Adjust Fares
Not every domestic route has experienced increases of the same magnitude, but the general trend points towards higher travel costs across several destinations.
Ibom Air’s Lagos-Uyo economy fare increased from N143,200 to N200,300.
Meanwhile, passengers travelling from Abuja to Uyo were expected to pay approximately N200,100 for a December 21 flight.
These increases are comparatively moderate when measured against the nearly 200 per cent jumps recorded on some routes operated by other airlines.
Other destinations affected by rising festive-season fares include Port Harcourt, Owerri and Ebonyi.
For passengers travelling to these locations, the cost of securing a flight is becoming an increasingly important consideration as Christmas approaches.
The situation is particularly challenging for Nigerians who prefer air transportation because of the distance involved in road journeys or concerns about the practicality of travelling by road during the festive season.
Why Do Flight Prices Increase During Christmas?
The rise in domestic airfares comes as airlines prepare for increased passenger traffic during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The festive season traditionally attracts large numbers of Nigerians travelling from major commercial centres such as Lagos and Abuja to their hometowns across the country.
Many passengers begin making travel arrangements weeks or months before Christmas, creating increased demand for seats on popular routes.
As available seats become more limited, ticket prices can rise, particularly for passengers booking closer to their intended departure dates.
Routes connecting Lagos and Abuja to destinations in the South-East and South-South are particularly important during this period because of the large number of people who travel home to reunite with family members.
However, the latest price increases have renewed questions about the affordability of domestic air transportation in Nigeria.
For many households already dealing with rising living expenses, spending more than N300,000 on a single economy-class ticket represents a significant financial commitment.
The situation could be even more difficult for families purchasing multiple tickets or passengers who need to travel urgently.
FCCPC Previously Accused Airlines of Yuletide Price-Fixing
The latest increases have also brought renewed attention to concerns previously raised by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over airline pricing practices during the festive season.
In January 2026, the commission accused some domestic airlines of engaging in price-fixing during the 2025 Yuletide period.
The commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Tunji Bello, disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that domestic airfares had risen to between N405,000 and N600,000 during the Christmas travel period.
The investigation raised concerns about whether some of the fare increases reflected normal market conditions or potentially anti-competitive practices among airline operators.
Subsequent findings by the FCCPC indicated that ticket prices during the December travel rush were substantially higher than fares recorded after the holiday period on several domestic routes.
What particularly attracted the regulator’s attention was that these significant fare differences occurred despite relative stability in some major airline operating expenses.
These included aviation fuel, government-imposed taxes and foreign exchange costs.
The findings prompted further questions about the factors responsible for the sharp seasonal increases and whether passengers were being exposed to unfair pricing practices.
The renewed fare increases ahead of Christmas 2026 could therefore place domestic airline pricing under additional public and regulatory scrutiny.
Nigerians Express Frustration Over Rising Christmas Travel Costs
The latest developments have generated concerns among travellers who depend on domestic flights to visit their families during the festive season.
For many Nigerians living and working outside their home states, Christmas provides an important opportunity to reconnect with relatives and participate in family celebrations.
However, the rising cost of airline tickets threatens to make such trips increasingly difficult.
A passenger expressed frustration over the situation, urging airlines to consider the economic difficulties facing ordinary Nigerians.
“We understand that this always happens, but airlines must please consider the current economy. Things are not easy, and road travel is not possible,” the passenger said.
The comment reflects the concerns of travellers who feel they have limited alternatives, particularly those who cannot reasonably undertake long-distance road journeys.
With economy tickets already exceeding N300,000 on some routes, passengers may be forced to reconsider their travel plans, book earlier than usual or spend a larger portion of their income on transportation.
Will Christmas 2026 Flight Tickets Become Even More Expensive?
With Christmas still approaching, uncertainty remains over whether domestic airfares will increase further as demand rises.
The latest booking figures already show substantial differences between November fares and tickets available for December 20 and 21.
If demand continues to build and available seats become increasingly limited, passengers booking closer to Christmas could face additional financial pressure.
The situation also presents a challenge for regulators, particularly following the FCCPC’s previous investigation into unusually high festive-season airfares.
For airlines, higher demand during peak travel periods provides an opportunity to maximise revenue. However, the scale of the increases has raised questions about how seasonal pricing affects consumers, especially in an economy where many households are already struggling with rising costs.
Ultimately, Nigerians hoping to celebrate Christmas with their families may have to make difficult decisions about their travel budgets.
With some economy-class tickets now approaching N340,000, the annual journey home is becoming increasingly expensive, raising fresh concerns about whether domestic air travel will remain affordable for ordinary Nigerians during the festive season.
