Arsenal had to work for it. After dominating possession without finding a breakthrough, the Gunners finally opened Sunderland up in the second half before a late Bukayo Saka penalty secured a hard-earned 2-0 Premier League victory on Saturday.
Sunderland pushed Arsenal all the way. But two key moments swung the contest.
Arsenal Dominate, Sunderland Hold Firm
Arsenal controlled 75% of possession in the first half, but Sunderland’s defence repeatedly frustrated the visitors.
Kai Havertz came closest to breaking the deadlock when his effort from the edge of the box forced goalkeeper Robin Roefs into an impressive save.
Arsenal continued to probe.
Gabriel sent a long-range effort narrowly wide of the right post, while Havertz later fired over after connecting with a pass from Martin Ødegaard.
Sunderland had opportunities of their own, particularly from set pieces. In the 16th minute, Daniel Ballard rose to meet a free-kick delivery but headed just wide.
The first half ended goalless, with Arsenal’s dominance in possession failing to translate into a goal.
Guimaraes Finally Breaks the Deadlock
Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough in the 58th minute.
Bruno Guimaraes received the ball from Declan Rice and unleashed a spectacular long-range strike. The shot crashed in off the post and into the top-right corner, giving Roefs no realistic chance.
Arsenal were ahead.
But Sunderland immediately had a chance to change the story.
Raya Becomes Arsenal’s Hero
Sunderland were awarded a penalty after Arsenal were penalised inside the area.
Enzo Le Fée took responsibility from the spot, but David Raya produced a superb save, getting across to push the penalty onto the post.
It was a huge moment.
Instead of 1-1, Arsenal retained their lead.
Sunderland refused to back down, however, and continued searching for an equaliser. Nordi Mukiele headed over from a promising position before Raya again came to Arsenal’s rescue, reacting sharply to deny Mukiele from close range.
The pressure was mounting.
Timber Goal Ruled Out
Arsenal thought they had finally put the contest beyond Sunderland in the 78th minute when Jurrien Timber found the net.
The celebrations did not last.
The goal was ruled out for offside, keeping Sunderland within touching distance.
The hosts continued to believe they could rescue something.
Then came the decisive moment.
Saka Seals the Points
Deep into stoppage time, Sunderland’s hopes collapsed.
Reinildo Mandava received a second yellow card in the 96th minute after committing a foul inside the penalty area. Following consultation with the assistant referee, Arsenal were awarded a penalty.
Saka stepped up in the 97th minute.
Roefs managed to get a hand to the spot kick, but he could not keep it out. The ball rolled into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0.
That finally ended Sunderland’s resistance.
Arsenal saw out the remaining moments to claim a valuable victory in a match that was far more competitive than the final score suggested.
Guimaraes provided the breakthrough. Raya preserved the lead. Saka finished the job.
