A forgotten bag. More than N400,000 inside. And one decision that could have changed everything.
Commercial bus driver Onyekachi Ikpendu could have kept the money after a passenger left it behind in his vehicle. Instead, he secured the bag and made sure it got back to its owner.
The incident occurred on Friday in Abia State when Mrs Nkechi John, a petty trader, boarded Ikpendu’s bus at Uzuakoli, heading to the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia.
She alighted at Ubani Market, unaware that she had left behind a bag containing more than N400,000 and other personal belongings.
Driver Keeps the Bag Safe
John quickly realised her mistake and returned to the terminal in search of the vehicle.
By then, Ikpendu had already secured the abandoned bag and everything inside it.
For him, the choice was simple.
He told journalists that he was satisfied with earning his livelihood honestly and had no reason to take money that belonged to someone else.
“I am grateful and content with what I have, therefore, no amount of money I see now will move me to take what does not belong to me.”
Ikpendu added that his decision was also rooted in his belief that honesty and good deeds are ultimately rewarded by God.
The Money Was Meant for Business
John expressed her appreciation to the driver, describing his action as an important demonstration of honesty.
She also credited the newly constructed terminal for making it easier to locate the vehicle and recover her belongings.
According to her, the money was intended for her business, making its return particularly significant.
Transport Commissioner Praises Driver
The incident also drew commendation from Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, who praised Ikpendu for his integrity.
Ukaegbu described the driver as an example of the kind of responsible behaviour he would like other residents to emulate.
He further said the incident reflected what he regarded as a changing attitude among Abia residents.
The commissioner linked the development to the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, saying residents were increasingly demonstrating a willingness to do what is right without being forced.
A Small Act With a Bigger Message
The episode may have begun with a forgotten bag, but its significance goes beyond the money inside it.
For Ikpendu, keeping what was not his was never an option.
For John, the return of the cash protected money she needed for her livelihood.
And for the state government, the incident has become an example of how ordinary acts of integrity can strengthen trust within a community.
Sometimes, character is revealed when nobody is watching—and when there is more than N400,000 sitting within reach.
