The wait is over for Nigeria’s D’Tigress. President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that every player has received the naira equivalent of the $100,000 reward promised after their historic 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket victory.
The President also confirmed that members of the team’s official delegation have received the equivalent of $50,000 each, completing the financial rewards announced following Nigeria’s continental triumph.
Tinubu disclosed the development on Thursday through his official social media accounts, saying the Federal Government had now fulfilled its outstanding commitments to the women’s basketball team.
D’Tigress Rewards Finally Completed
The cash payments are part of a wider package announced for the team after its successful AfroBasket campaign.
In addition to the financial rewards, the Federal Government had promised the players:
- National honours
- Three-bedroom houses in Abuja
- $100,000 each for the players
- $50,000 each for team officials
Tinubu said the government had to follow the necessary legal and administrative procedures before completing the payments.
He stressed that those processes may have caused delays, but insisted that the government remained committed to keeping its word.
The President described the completion of the rewards as the first time, according to him, that a Federal Government had fully delivered such a presidential sports reward package within one year.
Super Falcons Also Set to Receive Outstanding Cash
Tinubu also provided an update on the rewards promised to Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, following their 2025 African Women’s Nations Cup triumph.
The President said the Federal Government was finalising payment of the outstanding cash component of their reward package.
However, some benefits have already been delivered.
According to Tinubu, the Super Falcons players and officials have received their property title documents for the houses allocated to them, alongside their National Honours certificates.
The team secured its 10th continental title in 2025, further cementing its dominance in African women’s football.
Super Eagles Rewards Already Redeemed
Tinubu further disclosed that the Federal Government had already fulfilled the housing and national honours commitments made to members of the Super Eagles after their silver-medal finish at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations.
The announcement means the administration’s reward programme now covers major achievements by Nigeria’s leading senior national teams in both basketball and football.
Tinubu: Athletes Deserve More Than Applause
The President said sporting success should be met with tangible recognition from the country.
“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word.”
He also urged Nigerian athletes to continue representing the country with pride, promising that their achievements would be recognised.
The message comes as the Federal Government seeks to reinforce its commitment to rewarding athletes who deliver major international successes for Nigeria.
