The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is mourning the death of its Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State.
Marafa died on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while travelling from Gusau, the state capital, according to the university.
NOUN Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, confirmed the death in a statement issued on Sunday.
University Confirms Death
According to the statement, the university received information that Marafa was shot while returning from Gusau.
The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university’s Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff and students, expressed sorrow over what the institution described as his sudden and untimely death.
The university said his death represents a significant loss to the institution and the wider NOUN community.
Marafa’s Career at NOUN
Marafa became the university’s Bursar on September 17, 2022, following his appointment to a five-year term that was due to run until September 2027.
During his career, he held several positions and was described by the university as a committed administrator who played an important role in the institution’s development.
Ajayi said Marafa served the university with dedication and hard work, describing him as a respected colleague and valued member of the NOUN community.
Condolences and Burial Plans
The university extended its condolences to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and students and staff of NOUN.
Burial arrangements will be announced by the family.
The institution also offered prayers for Marafa, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, while giving his loved ones and the university community the strength to cope with the loss.
