A 74-year-old cleric, Joseph Adeniran, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre over the alleged defilement of his nine-year-old granddaughter.

Adeniran was arraigned on Tuesday before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of defilement.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, the alleged incident occurred on June 18, 2026, at the defendant’s residence.

The prosecutor told the court that the child suffered bleeding following the alleged assault. A neighbour reportedly noticed bloodstains on the girl’s clothing and asked what had happened.

The prosecution said the child then identified her grandfather as the person allegedly responsible.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to Adeniran’s arrest.

The prosecution said the alleged offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Court Withholds Plea

Chief Magistrate C.M. Kushanu did not take Adeniran’s plea.

The court ordered that he remain in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre until September 24, when the matter is expected to come up pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The allegations have not been determined by the court, and the defendant remains entitled to due process.
